Most flagship phones offer great cameras. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra offers something different — a camera system that makes you question whether you need a dedicated mirrorless camera at all. Co-engineered with Leica, featuring sensors and optics that simply don't exist at any price in other smartphones, the 17 Ultra is the most photographically ambitious phone ever launched in India.

At ₹1,39,999 (18% off MRP), it's positioned against the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max. In camera capability, it surpasses both. We tested it extensively over two weeks — street photography in Bengaluru, wildlife shots at Bandipur, portraits, low-light cityscapes, 8K video, and daily use — to give you the most honest and complete assessment possible.

In practical terms, the Leica collaboration means two things: the lenses pass Leica's optical quality standards (controlled aberration, precise focus falloff, accurate edge sharpness), and the image processing honours how light actually looks rather than applying heavy AI enhancements that make photos look artificial.

You can shoot in Leica Authentic mode for accurate, film-like colours with natural skin tones — ideal for portraits and documentary photography. Or choose Leica Vibrant mode for punchier, saturated colours suited to travel and social media content. Both modes produce images that look visually distinct and mature compared to the over-processed output of most smartphone cameras.

The headline is the 1-inch LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) sensor — a technology that dramatically expands the sensor's dynamic range beyond what standard CMOS sensors can achieve. In high-contrast scenes (bright sky, dark foreground), the LOFIC sensor retains detail in both areas simultaneously. In our Bandipur shots, trees in shadow and the bright open sky behind them were both perfectly exposed in a single frame — something that typically requires HDR bracketing on conventional sensors.

The 200MP periscope telephoto with mechanical continuous zoom is unprecedented in any smartphone. Most telephoto cameras are fixed focal length — you choose 3X or 5X. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra's telephoto physically moves its lens elements to zoom continuously from 75mm to 100mm, delivering true optical quality throughout the entire zoom range. At 200MP, you can crop aggressively from a telephoto shot and still have more detail than most cameras capture at their native resolution.

In our wildlife testing at Bandipur, deer photographed at 80mm distance at dusk retained fur detail, eye catchlights, and background separation that would typically require a ₹2–3 lakh mirrorless telephoto setup. For sports, wildlife, events, and candid street photography where you can't get close, this telephoto system is in a category of its own.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (3nm) paired with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage makes the 17 Ultra one of the fastest Android phones available. Everything is instantaneous — app launches, camera switching between lenses, editing a 200MP RAW file in Lightroom Mobile, gaming at max settings, and 8K video export all happen without hesitation.

For gaming, we ran BGMI on Ultra HD + Extreme 90fps for sustained sessions. The phone maintains performance without thermal throttling thanks to a large vapour chamber cooling system. Surface temperatures stayed below 42°C during 45-minute gaming sessions — controlled and comfortable for handheld play.

The 16GB RAM ensures that apps opened hours ago remain ready in memory. If you're the kind of user who jumps between Lightroom, Photoshop Mobile, Google Drive, WhatsApp, and Zoom throughout the day without wanting anything to reload, the 17 Ultra handles that workload with ease.

The 6.9-inch 2K AMOLED panel with 120Hz is the ideal canvas for the 17 Ultra's photography focus. Reviewing photos and videos at 2K resolution lets you evaluate focus, detail, and colour accuracy directly on the phone — something that's simply not possible at 1080p or HD resolution. For content creators who edit and post directly from the phone, this display quality matters enormously.

Peak brightness is exceptional — outdoor use in direct Bengaluru afternoon sun was comfortable, with map navigation and photo review both easily readable. The AMOLED panel delivers perfect blacks, accurate colours in both Leica viewing modes, and wide viewing angles. At 6.9 inches, it's a large screen that justifies its size with genuinely useful extra space for editing, reviewing, and creating content.

The 6,000mAh Surge Battery is a meaningful upgrade over typical flagship batteries (4,000–5,000mAh). In our testing — which included significant camera use, 4–5 hours of screen-on time, 5G browsing, and editing — the phone consistently lasted a full day with 20–30% remaining. On lighter days, we reached 1.5 days comfortably.

Camera use is notably power-hungry on phones with large sensors, so having a 6,000mAh battery is practically important for photography-focused use. Shooting an entire day of events, travel photography, or wildlife without carrying a power bank is realistic with the 17 Ultra.
